Big Brother / Big Sister Program
Would you believe that people would come to an event like Southern Comfort and not leave their room?
They would check in and later just leave without ever experiencing the magic of the conference.
Well they did and the reason was fear. You show up, your first time out, not knowing a soul and fear overcomes you. Well the Big Brother/Big Sister (BB/BS) Program was started back in 1998 to help the newbie and to never let someone miss out on the experience of a lifetime. In essence the BB/BS is a friend who will, if needed, come up to your room and walk you down to the conference, show you around the conference facilities, introduce you to their friends, and just help to make your time at SCC the most wonderful experience you have ever had.
When you register for the conference you can request a Big Brother or Big Sister and for the returning SCC attendees, they can volunteer. Hopefully we can match people up prior to the conference so that they can exchange e-mails. The newbie can ask questions and learn what to expect. The Big Brother or Big Sister can clue the newbie into what to bring, tips on how to survive four full days with no sleep and just get to know each other that way the newbie will have at least one person at the conference that they know and as you all remember it is wonderful to have a friend to meet you at the event.
The qualifications to be a BB/BS are simple. One, you need to have attended at least one SCC in the past and the other is that you are trans yourself. Let’s face it, no one really understands a trans person like another trans person. The only exception is for couples and we do try to match couples as well.
For the newbie, all you have to do is ask. Even if you thought you did not need one and arrive at the conference and then find out that you really would like someone to walk down the hall with you, just ask. Call down to the SCC registration desk, and we will have someone come up to your room. It is that simple. We want you to have the best time of your life at SCC and we are here to help make that happen. However, we are not a dressing or makeup service. You will need to bring your own clothes and makeup. We have vendors in the Market Place that provide those services for a fee. You must be a registered attendee of SCC and have your own accommodations. If you want to share a room with someone, that is fine but you will have to make those arrangements yourself; do not expect to be staying with your BB/BS.
For additional information, to request assistance or to volunteer as a Big Brother/Sister, please send e-mail to bigsib@sccatl.org and our program coordinator will respond.
